June 1-8, 2008 Yoga Retreat on the

    Mediterranean Coast of Turkey

     Yuva_June_2007_revised_169.jpgLycian_tomb.jpgM&D 75th0088.JPG

Enjoy seven days of yoga, cultural immersion, delicious cuisine,

and the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and sea,

    with Anne O’Brien

on the turquoise coast of Turkey.

Here the western edge of the Toros Mountains plunging directly into the sea creates a vision of Homeric beauty steeped in the mysteries of ancient history.

The yoga retreat center is a rare find in Turkey. Accommodations in traditional Anatolian style cottages overlooking the sea are nestled among terraces of olive and citrus. Pines surround the area and paths weave through native herbs to our private swimming cove with pristine azure waters. Out host Attila, and his extended family, offer us warm Turkish hospitality, while working in and protecting the beautiful natural environment. Our delicious meals will be of locally grown organic vegetarian food prepared in the traditional Turkish style. Expect sunny weather in the low 80s.

The day begins with meditation and pranayama overlooking the sea. We will delve deeply into the practice with an enlivening morning yoga class. We the gather for an abundant brunch of typical Turkish dishes. Midday will be free time to swim, explore the coast, take a jaunt into town, have a massage, or rest. Afternoon class will be a gentle, restorative practice.  (This is a perfect place to bring your partner and friends not participating in the full yoga program, as we will have a morning stretch class for the non-yogis too!)

Midweek, we have a reprise of our cooking class that was such a hit last year and we will take one full day excursion to Pinara, one of the six principal cities of Lycia settled in the 5th century BC. There is no other Lycian site quite like Pinara with its untouched, gorgeous mountain setting of fragrant pines, ancient olive trees, wildflowers, thyme-scented breezes and its stunning view over the Xanthos valley. Pinara remains undiscovered by most and so retains its tranquil and mystical atmosphere.

Come enrich your yoga practice in this truly wonderful corner of the world!

For those who plan to spend a few days before the retreat seeing Istanbul, you can join Anne as she leads "An Insider's Day Out" in Istanbul!

    Lodging and Prices

Retreat price includes 7 nights double occupancy lodging, all meals, full yoga tuition, cooking class, and taxes. Not included are gratuities, your airfare and personal transportation, or the midweek excursion (about $40).

Book by January 15 and your full cost is only $1000; by March 15 pay $1200; and after April 1, the rate is $1300.

The Yoga of Zen: The Zen of Yoga
with Anne O’Brien and Ryushin Paul Haller

Join us as we explore the synergy and complimentary insights and practices of Hatha Yoga and Zen Buddhism. Yoga classes will combine a flowing vinyasa style that encourages movement of the body and breath with fluidity, grace, strength, and stability with technical inquiry into the architecture of the poses. The yoga asana help cultivate the flexibility, postural strength, and breath-work that are the basis of Zen practice. The Zen sessions will enable attention, inner quiet, and open awareness that support mind and body to flow as one through the yoga asana practice. An on going hatha yoga practice is essential and experience with meditation is preferable but not essential.

Our schedule allows ample time to partake of the wonderful Tassajara hot springs baths, hike the wilderness trails, and swim in the naturally heated pool. Come make this a time to rest, renew, and rejuvenate.

Below is information on the teachers and Tassajara.
FOR COMPLETE INFORMATION, LODGING CHOICES, COST, AND TO REGISTER PLEASE GO TO:
    www.sfzc.org
or call the San Francisco Zen Center Tassajara reservations at 415 865 1899.

Ryushin Paul Haller, co-abbot of San Francisco Zen Center, received Dharma Transmission from Sojun Mel Weitsman and has taught at Zen Center for 18 years. He has also taught in prisons, with the Zen Hospice Project, and throughout the United States and in Ireland. He has practiced Buddhism for over 30 years in Asia and the United States and lives in San Francisco.

Anne O'Brien is a devoted yoga practitioner and teacher from Northern California whose style integrates her studies in the Sivananda, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Anusara and Viniyoga traditions. She teaches workshops nationwide, leads retreats, and creates specialty yoga programs and training for companies and studios. Her teaching is informed and inspired by her own practice and her teachers Rodney Yee, John Friend, Dona Holleman and Edward Clark. She has studied extensively in the UK, India and the US, and has created and directed the Conference and Events Division at Yoga Journal.

Tassajara is located in a remote part of the Ventana Wilderness and for centuries has been visited as a place of healing. In 1966 the first Soto Zen monastery outside of Asia was established at Tassajara by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and the San Francisco Zen Center, to provide a place where seekers could withdraw from the busy world for a period of intensive meditation and study.

    The Baths

The native Esselen people were the first to soak in the natural hot springs of Tassajara and to believe in the healing and restorative properties of the water. Our bathhouse is Japanese-style and has separate sides for men and women. Each side includes a tiled indoor hot plunge, an outdoor plunge, large decks appropriate for sunning and yoga, a steam room, showers and a small private bath with hot springs and cold water spigots. There are also steps leading down to the creek.

    Meals

Three vegetarian meals are served daily to our overnight guests. A buffet bag lunch, featuring gourmet spreads and fresh-baked bread, is also offered each day, as well as coffee, tea and snacks.

    Zen Meditation

Guests are always welcome to join the residents for meditation and chanting every morning and evening. Free instruction is offered daily at 4 p.m. Come prepared for the meditation hall with comfortable dark pants and a shirt with sleeves.

    Hiking

There are many beautiful trails at Tassajara. Hiking maps and advice are available in the Stone Office.
